Ameland
With its distinctive red and white bands, the Ameland Lighthouse rises 55 metres above the dunes near Hollum on the Dutch Wadden Island of Ameland, in the province of Friesland.
Sometimes also known as Bornrif, the lighthouse was built in 1880–1881 on the orders of King Willem III. Designed by Dutch lighthouse architect Quirinus Harder, its unusual tower was constructed mainly from cast iron, with sections prefabricated before being assembled on Ameland.
