Chatham Light

Chatham Light

Chatham Light, located at the southern tip of Cape Cod, has been guiding sailors safely around the treacherous waters of the Cape since it was first lit in 1808. Originally constructed as a dual lighthouse with two separate towers, the current structure has been an iconic part of Chatham’s maritime landscape for over two centuries. The lighthouse’s strategic position near the dangerous Chatham Bar and its proximity to the Monomoy Islands make it an essential navigational aid for vessels entering or leaving Nantucket Sound.

The light has played a key role in warning ships of the shifting sands and shoals off Chatham, which have long posed a threat to maritime safety. Over time, Chatham Light’s position and design have been adapted to accommodate changing coastal conditions and advancements in technology. Today, it remains an enduring symbol of Cape Cod’s rich maritime history, continuing to serve as a critical beacon for safe passage along one of the most challenging stretches of coastline in New England.
