At the edge of Den Helder stands Lange Jaap, a towering red lighthouse that has watched over the Dutch coast since 1877. Rising more than 63 metres, it holds the title of the tallest cast-iron lighthouse in Europe. Designed by renowned architect Quirinus Harder, its bold presence made it a vital guide for ships navigating the Marsdiep and North Sea. Today, even though it’s closed to visitors, Lange Jaap remains an enduring symbol of Dutch maritime history and a much-loved landmark of the northern coast.
