Galley Head
Galley Head Lighthouse, completed in 1875 and first lit in 1878, overlooks the dramatic coastline of County Cork. Known for once having the most powerful lighthouse light in the world, it was designed to be visible from as far as 30 km away.
Uniquely, it casts a landward arc of light, a feature added after the Sultan of Turkey requested to view it from Castle Freke in Rosscarbery during a visit to the area. Fully automated since 1978, it continues to guide vessels along the southern Irish coast.
