Spitbank Lighthouse, established in 1853, is set on a mudbank in Cork Harbour. Designed using pioneering screw-pile technology by blind engineer Alexander Mitchell, it has played a critical role in guiding ships through one of Ireland’s busiest harbors. Its remote location at the end of a long mudbank makes Spitbank a remarkable engineering achievement and a vital navigational aid for Cork’s maritime traffic.
