Mutton Island
Mutton Island Lighthouse, first lit in 1817, served Galway Harbour for 160 years before being replaced by Leverets Light. The lighthouse, located just off the coast of Galway City, stands on the site of an old castle, which was demolished to make way for its construction. Fully automated in 1958, the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1978, but its historical significance continues to draw attention to this small island connected by a causeway to the mainland.
