Moville
Moville lighthouse, located on the northern shores of Lough Foyle, was established in 1861 to guide vessels entering the lough. Moville was historically an important port for transatlantic travel, with Glasgow steamships beginning to take on passengers from 1860. These large ships were dissatisfied with the small shore light and requested a stronger guide. As a result, the Londonderry Port & Harbour Commissioners agreed to build a large pile light with a powerful beam at Moville, ensuring safe passage for ships navigating the tricky waters of Lough Foyle.
In the late 1800s, Moville was one in a string of lighthouses built on piles, including Spitbank and Dundalk.
