Black Rock
Black Rock lighthouse, built in 1864, stands on a small, remote islet off the coast of County Mayo. It marks the entrance to Blacksod Bay and was constructed to assist ships navigating the dangerous waters of this part of the Atlantic. Isolated and exposed, the lighthouse has withstood numerous Atlantic storms over the years, making it a symbol of endurance on the western coast. On 20 August 1940, a German bomber (Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor) attacked the SS Macville which was passing close to the island and damaged several lantern panes and the roof of the lighthouse.
