Schiermonnikoog
The red Schiermonnikoog Lighthouse stands among the dunes of the island, overlooking the Wadden Sea from the northern coast of the Netherlands. It has been an important landmark on Schiermonnikoog since the 19th century and remains an active aid to navigation today.
There were originally two towers, built in 1853–1854 to help ships navigate the waters around the island. Neither tower was fitted with a light at first, but in 1910 a working light was installed in one of them. The second tower was then no longer needed, leaving the red lighthouse we know today as a distinctive feature of Schiermonnikoog in the Dutch province of Friesland.
