Schiermonnikoog
Standing proudly above the dunes of Schiermonnikoog, the island’s distinctive red lighthouse has been a familiar landmark on the Wadden Sea coast for more than a century.
The story of the Schiermonnikoog Lighthouse actually begins with two towers, built in 1853–1854 to help guide ships around the island. Neither originally carried a light, but in 1910 a light was installed in one of the towers, making the second tower obsolete. Today, the red lighthouse remains one of Schiermonnikoog’s best-known landmarks and is still an active aid to navigation, overlooking the island from its position in the Dutch province of Friesland.
