Rathlin West Lighthouse, located on Northern Ireland’s Rathlin Island, is famously known as the “upside-down” lighthouse due to its unique design, built into the cliff face in 1917. The island, just 18 km from Scotland, is home to one of the UK’s largest seabird colonies. The lighthouse was automated in 1983, but its unusual structure continues to attract visitors interested in its fascinating engineering.
