Block Island Southeast

Block Island Southeast

Perched atop the dramatic Mohegan Bluffs, Block Island Southeast Lighthouse has been a guiding light along Rhode Island’s coastline since 1875. This robust brick and granite tower, weighing 2,000 tons, has played a vital role in maritime navigation for over a century. However, the lighthouse faced a significant threat from coastal erosion, as the bluffs beneath it began to erode, putting the structure in danger.

In an unprecedented move, the lighthouse was carefully relocated in 1993, using hydraulic technology to lift the entire structure and move it 300 feet inland on metal rails. Today, safely positioned, Block Island Southeast Lighthousecontinues to serve as a beacon for sailors while preserving its status as a National Historic Landmark. Its resilience not only marks a critical moment in maritime preservation but also stands as a symbol of Rhode Island’s commitment to safeguarding its coastal heritage.
