Block Island Southeast
Perched atop the dramatic Mohegan Bluffs, Block Island Southeast Lighthouse has stood as a beacon along Rhode Island’s coastline since 1875. This brick and granite tower, weighing 2,000 tons, faced a dire threat from coastal erosion as the bluffs beneath it crumbled away.
To save the lighthouse, an ambitious hydraulic relocation project took place in August 1993, lifting the entire structure off its foundation and moving it 300 feet inland on metal rails. Now safely repositioned, it continues to guide sailors while preserving its National Historic Landmark status.
Today, it stands as a testament to both maritime history and the remarkable effort to preserve Rhode Island’s coastal heritage.
