Portland Head
Standing at the entrance to Casco Bay, Portland Head Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Maine, first illuminated in 1791 under the direction of President George Washington. Known for its classic New England charm, this white rubblestone tower was built using locally sourced materials, a cost-saving measure Washington himself suggested, as the stone could be easily hauled by oxen on a drag.
For over two centuries, this iconic coastal beacon has withstood fierce Atlantic storms, guiding sailors past Maine’s rocky shores. Today, Portland Head Lighthouse is one of the most photographed and celebrated lighthouses in the United States, offering breathtaking views of the rugged coastline.
