Phare des Baleines is one of France’s most striking lighthouses, standing 59 meters tall on the western tip of Île de Ré. Built in 1854 to replace an older 17th-century tower, this neoclassical lighthouse overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and serves as a vital navigational aid. Its powerful beam, reaching up to 50 km (31 miles), helps guide ships past the island’s shifting sands and strong currents.
The name Phare des Baleines—Lighthouse of the Whales—comes from the whales once commonly seen in the surrounding waters. Today, it remains a popular landmark, with 257 steps leading to panoramic views of Île de Ré’s coastline.
