Inisheer lighthouse, built in 1857, stands on the smallest of the Aran Islands, marking the entrance to Galway Bay. The lighthouse’s black-and-white striped tower is an iconic feature of the island, guiding ships through the rugged Atlantic waters. The tower and dwellings were built of the local very hard limestones which sees it listed within the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, calling it “a masterpiece of ashlar limestone construction”.
