Phare des Baleines
Rising 59 meters above the Atlantic, Phare des Baleines dominates the western tip of Île de Ré. Completed in 1854, this elegant neoclassical lighthouse replaced an older 17th-century tower and has guided sailors safely around the island’s treacherous sandbanks and currents ever since. Its beam, visible up to 50 km (31 miles), remains one of the most powerful along France’s Atlantic coast.
The lighthouse takes its name—Lighthouse of the Whales—from the many whales once spotted in the waters nearby. Visitors can climb its 257 spiral steps to enjoy sweeping views across Île de Ré’s coastline, making it both a historic monument and a must-see attraction for travelers exploring the Charente-Maritime region.
